The Changing Face of Putney Exchange- 2013 Our Year of Change and Opportunity

We are delighted to report that ten weeks into the development building works to deliver new retailing space for Putney Exchange are right on schedule with significant visible changes for all to see. The demolition of the properties formerly occupied by Millets and Thomas Cook are well under way creating the space to build a 21,250 sq ft unit for fashion retailer H&M. We anticipate that this phase of work will be complete by early May.

Before building works can commence the cleared site will be the focus of a planned Archaeological dig. Wandsworth Historical Society have already looked around the demolition site and identified some building materials to be salvaged which they believe to be of potential historical interest.

Over a period of two weeks the stained glass entrance feature has been carefully dismantled pane by pane and catalogued in order that it can be restored to its former glory. Once restored it is due to be reinstated fully illuminated to form the centre piece of the newly formed high street entrance early October.

Within the shopping centre behind the scenes at first floor we continue to work really hard to create a new public toilet facility and baby-care suite. We consulted with local parents and parenting groups to identify what features were of most importance to them when shopping with babies and young children and we truly believe that our new facility will exceed their expectations and offer the best shopping centre facilities for customers with families in South West London. This new customer facility is scheduled to open on mid May.

Putney Exchange is committed to reducing its carbon production and with this in mind, in partnership with Source London we have commissioned the installation of six electric vehicle charging points (EVCP’s).The charging points have been installed at the roof level of the shopping centre car park and are now fully operational and available to use free of charge (Normal parking charges still apply). Register with Source London and pay £10 per year per vehicle registration fee (electricity is included) and you can use any Source London Charge Points including those located at the Putney Exchange. For further information please visit the Source London website www.sourcelondon.net

For your added convenience we are also creating a further 45 shopper car parking spaces expected late summer.

Careful planning and consideration is vital to ensure that our neighbours and visitors are not inconvenienced during these extensive works. It is our priority to ensure that the shops continue to trade as normally as possible during the development. During building works it has been necessary to create a temporary ceiling in the centre in order to facilitate the creation of what is to become part of the first floor of the new retail unit. This area whilst lit remains a little gloomy therefore we have requested that additional lighting is provided.

A numbers of our retailers have recently invested in extending and improving their businesses in The Putney Exchange. Waitrose completed their extensive refit in January 2013. Regis Hair Salon and Hutton’s Gifts and Clothing underwent shop refits complete with new shop fronts earlier this year. As part of the development works to create the new H&M unit, one of our original centre tenants, Aflair Home Furnishings located at first floor will soon undergo significant changes which will see their footage extended enabling them to further improve their retail offer and the customer experience.

We are also delighted to announce L’Occitane have chosen The Putney Exchange as a preferred location to open a store in May of this year. This continuing investment by our retailers is positive evidence of ongoing and future confidence in the success of The Putney Exchange shopping centre.

Anne Partridge, Centre Manager is excited by the prospect of the completion of the development: “Our new contemporary scheme, due for completion in November, will not only create a modern, attractive shopping environment that visitors and residents will want to spend time in but will also develop a point of difference for Putney, invigorating the High Street and improving the whole town centre’s appeal”.

Building works are scheduled for completion in November 2013 .The space will then be handed over to H&M who plan to open their new store early spring 2014.

Thank you all again for your continued co-operation and support.
